He’s a man whose life is so intertwined with his job that we know him only as “the columnist.” He writes for a newspaper in Seattle, isn’t afraid to stir up trouble, and keeps his life—including his multiple lovers and his past—in safe compartments. But it’s all about to be violently upended when he goes out on what seems like the most mundane of assignments, looking into a staid company that “never makes news.”

The moment one of his sources takes a dive off a downtown skyscraper, the columnist is plunged into a harrowing maze of murder, intrigue, and secrets that powerful forces intend to keep hidden at all costs. All he has to go on is a corporate world where nothing is as it seems, increasingly menacing encounters with mysterious federal agents, and the unsettling meme “eleven/eleven.”

Meanwhile, the paper itself is dying. So the columnist joins with an aggressive young reporter to see if one explosive story can save a newspaper. Soon they’re running to make the deadline of their lives....

"Deadline Man" is a mystery that is also an elegy for the newspaper. It is suffused with melancholy over the death of the newspaper and, more importantly, the "news" as it used to be. None of us can have missed the fact that most of our "news" these days is just entertainment (on most home pages, you have to search to find anything not sports or celebrities). Corporate objectives have suppressed unpalatable truths in pursuit of corporate goals. In "Deadline Man", Talton mentions all these ills. What's remarkable, though, is that he does it so deftly that it doesn't interfere at all with his story. As you likely read in other reviews, the story is told by a business columnist for the Seattle Free Press who discovers that his latest column has upset some powerful but unidentified people. He realizes that they must think he knows something important that he doesn't realize he knows, and that it may be connected with a recent interviewee who died shortly after meeting with him. As the columnist looks for answers, rather than the excitement and encouragement that Woodward & Bernstein got from Ben Bradlee, he receives orders from his management to leave the subject alone and refusal to publish his findings. Of course, being stubborn and "old school", he perseveres, precipitating escalating mayhem.

The one aspect of "Deadline Man" that bothered me was the women. Talton for some reason included the male fantasy of endless available women longing to have sex with the columnist. In particular, I was bothered by the beautiful young reporter who more or less tackles him and strips them both at their first meeting. Come ON!

That aside, I highly recommend this wonderfully atmospheric mystery.

Deadline Man edition by Jon Talton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

In our vacation house I have a shelf dedicated to the newspapers and newsmen. I enjoyed this book from the library and wanted it on my shelf. By happenstance, this writer works for the Seattle Times which is near our hometown.
Good writer. I like the David Mapstone series, too. He always engages place as a part of the story, which is fun because I feel like a know a place better when I finish the book even if I've never been there.
This time the setting is Seattle not Phoenix. But like the Mapstone novels set in Phoenix, this is a great plot, complex with great characters, and not a predictable end. And, the author does know Seattle, so this is well worth reading, but I still hope to see more of Mapstone.
I actually attended college with this guy, taking a Shakespeare Class under the tutelage of Dr. Margaret O'Riley, Ph.D. I had NO IDEA, he was a WRITER. He is GOOD. Very GOOD. This Novel is a PAGE-TURNER. He was an actual newspaper man at an early age too. So he does have real life experience.
I've read all of Jon Talton's books, this one I like least of all. Call me old school, call me a toad, but I want to believe men like this are gone for good. Maybe that is what happened to print edition.
OK, I admit it. One of my life goals is to serve as president of the Jon Talton fan club. I've felt that way reading through the Mapstone series as well as Talton's blogs on economics, city planning, water, and politics (although "the Pain Nurse", not so much). But I truly admired "Deadline Man"--for Talton's writing craftsmanship, his development of a central character of depth and human ambiguity, and a plot line which creates unforgettable suspense while at the same time asking some unforgivable questions about capitalism and the politics of greed.

Read the book. I think you'll admire Talton's writing as much as I do. But call ME "Prez"...
I've known Jon Talton's keen mind on the page for years as a reader of his Seattle Times economic pieces. Here he delivers a fascinating, plot-driven look behind the scenes at a crashing news industry, in the guise of a flawed but sympathetic Every Newspaperman. The women blend together for our hero, but conspiracy details stand out in this intriguing, engaging mystery. The Seattle setting is authentically rendered and serves as a fitting backdrop to a dark and dirty, high-stakes world. Those drawn to government power dystopias will particularly appreciate the story line here, both as a warning and cause for believable drama.
